Professional Biography
Dr. Frederick L. Tyson is a scientist and research strategist with over three decades of experience in research program development and leadership in environmental health sciences and biomedical research. He earned his Ph.D. in Genetics from Rutgers University and completed postdoctoral research training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center before joining the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Tyson spent more than 28 years at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), where he served in scientific and program leadership roles within the Division of Extramural Research and Training. During his NIH career, he developed and led research initiatives spanning Health Disparities, Oceans and Human Health, environmental epigenomics, and other emerging areas at the intersection of environmental exposures and human health.
A hallmark of his career has been identifying emerging scientific opportunities and helping transform them into new research directions. Most recently, this included advancing the emerging field of RNomics—the study of the full complement, diversity, regulation, and biological functions of RNA—as a new frontier for understanding how environmental exposures influence human health and disease. This work brought together RNA biology, epitranscriptomics, environmental health sciences, toxicology, and disease biology to help define new research questions and opportunities for the field.
Following his retirement from federal service in 2026, Dr. Tyson founded Tyson Research & Strategic Consulting (TRSC). Through TRSC, he draws on decades of scientific and program leadership experience to help investigators, research institutions, and scientific organizations identify emerging opportunities, sharpen their research vision, develop competitive funding strategies, build strategic collaborations, and position ambitious scientific ideas for impact.
Philosophy
The research environment has changed. Strategy has to keep pace.
Science is interdisciplinary
Important questions rarely belong to a single field. Research programs increasingly succeed through deliberate, well-structured collaboration.
Science is competitive
Strong ideas are not automatically funded ideas. Positioning, clarity, and alignment with funding priorities matter enormously.
Science is data-intensive
Modern research generates layered, complex data. Programs need a framework that makes that complexity legible and compelling.
Science is strategic
A sustainable career is built from a coherent research vision, a funding trajectory, and relationships cultivated over time.
Build the Strategy Behind Your Science.
Whether you are developing a new research program, pursuing competitive funding, strengthening collaborations, or planning the next stage of your scientific career, Tyson Research and Strategic Consulting provides experienced strategic guidance.
